How does psychotherapy work?

Our earliest relational experiences create a blueprint for our future relationships, informing our needs and wants, how we feel about ourselves and how we expect to be treated. We often absorb messages of ‘how to be’ and ‘how to act’ when very young.
Maybe it was not okay to be angry in your family, or that to be quiet was to be ‘good’? Did you learn to not ask for help because it was safer not to? These adapted patterns of relating which were effective when we were young, can become habitual and might no longer serve us well.
Our repeating patterns of adaptations and adjustments are ever present in our relationships with others. Through the therapeutic relationship, we can start to look at what may be unresolved or disowned within us. We can become aware of them and begin to integrate these sometimes hidden and unknown parts of ourselves, helping us to grow and step into our true selves more fully, authentically and with less shame.
Therapy FAQ
How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
I work relationally which means that the connection between therapist and client is really important. Because of this, I offer a free consultation session of up to 50mins so that you can get an idea of what it might be like to work together. This consultation session will be a gentle initial meeting. We will discuss what has brought you to therapy and see how it feels to work together. It’s an opportunity for you to see if my presence and approach feel right for you. I can also answer any questions you may have.
How long are sessions and how often will we meet?
Sessions last for 50 minutes and typically occur once a week or fortnightly, usually at a regular day and time.
What are your fees and cancellation policy?
My fee is £40 per session in line with my current status as a UKCP Therapist-in-Training. To support the continuity of our work, I ask for at least 48 hours' notice for any cancellations.
Where do we meet?
I have a therapy room (see images) located in a quiet corner of Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, within St. Gabriel's Parish Centre. There is ample free parking within the centre grounds and surrounding residential streets. I also offer online therapy.
